The 1959 animated picture Sleeping Beauty from Walt Disney Productions features the fictional character Maleficent.
The young Princess Aurora is cursed to “prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die” before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday by the evil fairy, also known as the “Mistress of All Evil.” Her reason for the curse is that she was not invited to a christening.
Maleficent is modeled after Sleeping Beauty’s evil fairy godmother from Charles Perrault’s fairy tale and Little Briar Rose, the villain from the Brothers Grimm’s adaptation of the same tale. Marc Davis was the animator for Maleficent.
Her original voice was given by Eleanor Audley, who had previously played Cinderella’s evil stepmother, Lady Tremaine, in Cinderella (1950).
A reimagined version of the character debuted as the lead character in the 2014 live-action Maleficent movie, portrayed by Angelina Jolie, who later returned to the role in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
